Fermenting Food on the Homestead
Fermentation is one of the oldest methods of food preservation next to drying of food. Fermenting foods has numerous health benefits as probiotics and prebiotics are created during the fermentation process. These pro and prebiotics are quite beneficial to our gut and immune health. Not only are these little guys beneficial to our gut and immune health, but also during the fermentation process sometimes vitamin content is increased! As if the health benefits aren’t enough, there’s also the surprising bonus that you don’t need electric in order to preserve food via fermentation! You don’t even need a refrigerator to store it! It is shelf-stable (within reason) and is ready to eat when you are. Fermenting is really a win-win!
